Paraphrasing is expressing the same ideas that you heard, or read in your own words or in different words. There are various ways to paraphrase something but here, five techniques are being described to ease paraphrasing.
Some strategies to help do paraphrasing are as follow:
- Phrasal Verbs
- General Verbs
1) Synonyms: (similar meaning)
If the original sentence is “The hardest language to learn is Mandarin.” It can be paraphrased in this way:
- i) The most difficult language to learn is Mandarin. (Right but too closed to the original sentence)
- ii) The most difficult language to master is Mandarin. (Better)
iii) Mandarin is one the most difficult languages to master. (Best or more successful paraphrase)
2) Antonyms: (opposite meaning)
If the original sentence is “The man is tall.” It can be paraphrased in this way:
The man is not short.
Similarly, if the original sentence is “The school is far away.” We can paraphrase as;
The school is not near.
3) Phrasal Verbs: (two or three words verb)
If the original sentence is “She discarded her used lipstick case in the trash cane.” It can be paraphrased as;
She threw away her used lipstick case.
4) General Verbs
If the original sentence is “The factory manufactures boxes.” It can be paraphrased as;
The factory produces boxes. Or The factory makes boxes.
If the original sentence is “Many people in Canada are bilingual.” It can be paraphrased as;
Many people in Canada speak two languages.
Active/passive and direct/indirect also include in paraphrasing. For example:
He said, “I will go to market tomorrow.” (Original sentence)
He told me that he would go to market the next day. (Paraphrased)
The party cancelled the meeting. (Original sentence)
The meeting was cancelled. (Paraphrased)
Also the order of the original sentence can be changed like the first example above:
(Mandarin is one the most difficult languages to master.)
The thing to understand is that the words are your own while paraphrasing but the theme or the meaning of the original sentence remains same. These are the basic ways to teach paraphrasing but there more ways. You can use others as well in accordance with your comfort.
